What Is QIF Format?

Quicken Interchange Format, an older plain-text format for transferring financial data between applications.

QIF Format Explained

QIF (Quicken Interchange Format) is a legacy file format developed by Intuit for exporting and importing financial data. Unlike modern XML-based formats like OFX, QIF uses a simple text-based structure with single-character field identifiers. While largely replaced by OFX and QFX, QIF is still supported by many accounting tools and remains useful for importing historical data. CSV is generally preferred over QIF for bank statement conversion because of its wider compatibility.

Technical Details

QIF files use line-based records where each line starts with a single character identifier: D for date, T for amount, P for payee, M for memo, N for check number, C for cleared status, and ^ as a record separator. QIF lacks unique transaction IDs, making duplicate detection difficult during import. The format does not support multi-currency transactions or detailed account metadata. Despite its limitations, QIF remains supported by QuickBooks, GnuCash, MoneyDance, and other tools as a fallback import format.

Examples

  • Exporting transactions from an old copy of Quicken as a .qif file
  • Importing QIF data into GnuCash for personal finance tracking
  • A legacy banking system offering QIF as the only download format
