What Is Payee?

The person, business, or entity receiving a payment in a financial transaction.

Payee Explained

A payee is the recipient of a payment. On bank statements, the payee name appears in the transaction description, identifying who received your money (for debits) or who sent you money (for credits). Clear payee information is essential for categorizing transactions during bookkeeping. When converting bank statements to CSV, the payee name is extracted as part of the description field, which accounting software uses for auto-categorization rules.

Technical Details

Payee names on bank statements come from different sources depending on the transaction type. Debit card transactions use the merchant's registered name with the card network (which may differ from the DBA name). ACH transactions use the originator's company name from the NACHA file. Check transactions may show the payee from check image OCR. Wire transfers include the beneficiary name. These inconsistencies mean the same entity might appear under different names across transaction types. Accounting software handles this through payee aliases and matching rules when importing CSV data.

Examples

  • A debit card transaction showing payee 'STARBUCKS STORE #1234'
  • A check made out to payee 'City Water Department'
  • An ACH credit from payee 'ACME CORPORATION - PAYROLL'
