What Is Check Number?

A unique sequential number printed on each check, used to identify and track individual check payments.

Check Number Explained

A check number is the identifying number printed in the upper-right corner of a paper check. Banks include check numbers on statements to help account holders track which checks have cleared. When converting bank statements to CSV, check numbers appear in the description or a dedicated column, which is useful for matching cleared checks against your check register. Identifying check numbers in CSV data helps during reconciliation to find outstanding checks that have not yet cleared.

Technical Details

Check numbers are assigned sequentially by the check book and printed in MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) encoding on the bottom of the check alongside the routing number and account number. On bank statements, check transactions typically show the check number in the description field (e.g., 'Check #1234') or in a separate reference column. During CSV conversion, the parser extracts these numbers as part of the transaction description. Some statements group check transactions separately from electronic transactions, requiring the parser to handle both sections.

Examples

  • Check #1052 for $800 rent payment cleared on March 5
  • A bank statement listing cleared checks in numerical order in a separate section
  • Reconciling by matching check numbers from your register against the CSV export
